If you haven’t taken a look at Windows 8, you really should.
I haven’t been excited about a Microsoft release in a long time, but watching Microsoft’s debut video on YouTube about it makes me pretty excited.
Whatever device they’re running it on is smooth as butter. Animation is just as clean and high quality as the iPad. The idea of frames is a really neat idea- kind of like a customizable widget with a little more info.
It looks to have social media and sharing built into the heart of it. A few flashes of the frames show Twitter and Facebook built in. That’s exciting.
I’m hoping for built in SkyDrive integration. Very cool if it’s well executed. Make it work like the Chromebook, please.
It’s good to see that the classic Windows interface is still available, but it’s good to see Microsoft not putting that on center stage. Good to see that there’s still a file system as well. I’m sure these things are going to freak the crap out of people when they see it for the first time.
For Windows 8 to succeed, the tablets are going to have to come out in full force. They need to be cheap but high quality. Sleek and sexy is a must. Microsoft really needs to build a platform that makes people want to use it. So far, it looks like they’re doing a great job.
Part of the future success of the Windows PC market is going to be determined by the kind of hardware that is introduced. Microsoft needs to find a way to encourage more development of good, cheap, and fast hardware to compete with the iPad and Android tablets. They need to buddy-up with the manufacturers and supply chain and make the value happen. Most people want the iPad because it works really well and is only $500. Microsoft’s going to have to figure out a way to help the manufacturers get their cost down to that point, or this potential power player isn’t going to leave port.
It really looks like Microsoft is doing a good job with Windows 8. Like I’ve talked about before, people want nice technology that enhances their lives, now the ball is in Microsoft’s court to implement and execute a killer platform and do what they can to get it on killer hardware.
In a way, they’re already way behind, but it looks like they’re doing their best to stay on top of the game.
Good luck Microsoft. Wow me.
